Home / Club Runs / Morpeth Broom Making 11

A beautiful sunny morning as we departed the Rock Pool for Morpeth. It started raining on the freeway and the skies looked ominous as we headed south, but luckily the weather was fine when 19 club members arrived at Morpeth at John Wright’s Broom making factory. John welcomed us into his workshop where there was a collection of old push bikes, buggies and tools. John then proceeded to show how he made his millet brooms by selecting a broom stick and attaching several sections of millet to the stick with wire and nails and guillioting the millet ends to make them even and then sewing the ties into the millet of the broom. The larger the broom the more rows of ties are required. John is the only millet broom maker in Australia (as far as he is aware). John grows his own millet for his brooms. After the demonstration 17 members had lunch at the Common Grounds Cafe at Morpeth overlooking the Hunter River. It was a lovely venue and menu quite varied to suit all tastes, the staff very organised for our group. A most enjoyable outing, well done events team.
