After order books were suddenly closed last month, Tesla has confirmed the updated Model S and Model X will not be built in right-hand drive after all – and will not be sold in Australia.

The Tesla Model S and Model X electric vehicles will not return to Australia in updated form, the US electric-car specialist has confirmed – after pre-orders were halted last month.

Tesla advised customers today that “due to recent changes in the vehicle program”, the updated Model S and Model X will “not be available in right-hand drive”.

Buyers who have placed a pre-order on a Model S or Model X since they were unveiled at the start of 2021 will be given a refund of their circa-$400 deposit, and a $3000 credit towards a smaller Model 3 sedan or Model Y SUV, Tesla has advised.

The announcement comes after pre-orders were paused in Australia in April 2023 – and 18 months after prices and delivery times were pulled from the Tesla Australia website in late 2021.

The facelifted electric cars were unveiled for the US in January 2021 – and commenced deliveries in North America shortly afterwards – but right-hand-drive production has not begun in the two years since.

Estimated Australian delivery timing when orders opened was listed as “late 2022” for the Model S and Model X, but this date was pulled later in 2021.

The last Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles delivered in Australia joined local roads at the end of 2020, in pre-facelifted form.

It is unclear why Tesla has elected not to produce the updated Model S and Model X in right-hand drive – or how long ago the decision was made.

Buyers who ordered a vehicle are being offered $3000 towards a new Model 3 or Model Y – but it will only be valid for orders placed before 31 October 2023.

“Due to recent changes to the vehicle program, Model S [and Model X] will not be available in Right Hand Drive. Unfortunately this means your order is unable to be fulfilled and will be cancelled,” Tesla’s notice to customers reads.

“You will receive a full refund for any payments made. We understand that this may be disappointing news to receive and want to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The Model S and Model X will be available in the right-hand-drive UK and Japanese markets – but with the steering wheel on the left-hand side. Unlike Australia, it is legal in these countries to register brand-new left-hand-drive vehicles for road use.

The decision not to offer the updated Tesla Model S and Model X pushes the future of the Tesla Cybertruck ute in Australia further under a cloud.

Pre-orders for the Cybertruck were pulled from the Tesla Australia website in May 2022, about a year before the Model S and Model X pre-orders were pulled.

Tesla is yet to give a formal indication of whether there remain plans to introduce the sharply-styled vehicle to local showrooms.

The Great Lakes Historic Automobile Club’s Mid Coast Ford Motorfest is back and Classic cars are a feature of the day!
This flagship event is being held in John Wright Park, Tuncurry on Sunday June 11, from 8am to 2pm.
Held annually for over 30 years, the Great Lakes Historical Automobile Club invites all motor clubs to join us overlooking the beautiful Cape Hawke Harbour at Tuncurry. The club expects the event to be the biggest to date with more than 280 vehicles on display.
This year sees increasing interest in displays by numerous car clubs with trophies to be awarded to ‘Best Club Display’ for the winner and runner-up. Entries include the Pontiac, Morgan and Mustang owners clubs as well as strong interest from local clubs. Prizes and trophies will be presented across a broad range of vehicles.
The motor show is not restricted to car clubs, so motorists with vehicles that may be of ‘special interest’ are welcome to join in with fellow enthusiasts. Come on down to John Wright Park with your vehicle from 8am to 9.30am. We are also expecting a good display of motorcycles.
On display also will be a very interesting array of stationery engines from the DONKS Club. There will be performances by a group from the Australian Army Band throughout the morning. Great Lakes FM will be broadcasting live throughout the show. Hot food and coffee will be available.
Entry for vehicles on display is $10, the proceeds of which will go to Great Lakes Palliative Care Group.
The event is open to the public, and entry for the public is free.

For enquiries, contact Laurie Curtin on 0402 315 215.

A big thank you to Midcoast Council for their generous support with this event.

KMARC Valley Rally – 6th & 7th May 2023
Saturday 6th Meet and greet, morning tea at the weather shed in the caravan park and given our rally pack.
All the cars were parked in the caravan park parking area. 46 participants for this rally which was down from previous years. Quite a few spectators observed the good variety of cars as we left on our run at 10:15am. The tour took us around a well marshalled run around Belmore River, North to South West Rocks, Arrakoon, then up to the race course in West Kempsey, where all the vehicles were parked in ten-year categories for judging. Lunch was served at 12:30pm – delicious sandwiches, drinks, cup cakes and fruit.
At 2:30pm, a retutn to home and afternoon of your choice. Sunday 7th 9am, brunch was served in the weather shed, sausage, bacon, egg, bread rolls, coleslaw, potato salad, tea and coffee. After which, the car judfing was announced, raffles drawn, goods auction and farewell speeches by the KMARC President and Treasurer. The Presidents Choice was won by Albert Waldock’s 1961 Chevrolet Bel Air. The 1960-69 won by Harvey Haworth’s 1967 Holden HR. Of the 24 rallies run by KMARC, Harvey and I have attended 22 and really appreciate all the effort and hard work the organisation put in by the participating members. Thank you.
